Atomic Ape and Thruster!

Words can't describe the talent and pure creativity that 'Thruster!' produces both recorded and live. Timothy Young on Guitar (Session guitarist on tons of records you own), Kaveh Rastegar (Kneebody and session bassist on tons of records you own) and Matt Chamberlin (known for playing for Tori Amos but again on tons of records you own) These guys play a meld of math rock, avant guard jazz, grunge all in a sweet package. No vocals just an assault of instruments played in odd timings and weaving in and out from each other all to bring this cohesive blend of their own sound. As I write this I'm seriously having trouble describing how awesome these guys truly are.... so I guess I'll just just stay redundant with that statement.

Opening up the night was Atomic Ape. I really enjoyed these guys and what a perfect pairing with Thruster. I was instantly reminded of Mr. Bungle but they had this really cool vibe I couldn't really place. They were a thrill to listen to and humbling as a musician to watch. It was their album release show.. and they're currently on tour. Below are two slide shows... the top one is thruster! and the bottom atomic ape.. Enjoy!

I don't just shoot in studio ya know!

So! I had the pleasure of shooting a friend again (due to visa issues we're not mentioning names) We did a quick beach shoot. (big thanks to my Buddy and videographer guru Jon Killz for assisting) These photos came out beautiful!

We went to a beach in San Pedro with the intentions of shooting for a while but when we got there the sun was falling fast! So we ended up going back to the studio and doing some fun shots against a white wall (my favorite.. such a fun fast and enjoyable look ala Terry Richardson. Anyway below are a couple from each looks and the rest are in the portfolio section of the site. Hope you enjoy!

I'm super super pumped on these. It all started with instagram. I follow a bunch of different people and I started following Makeup Artist/ Mac Pro/ Pinup Model/ Awesome person: Nikki Napalm. I love her posts cause she seemed like such a fun person. She really has an amazing talent. So for months I always "liked" her instagram posts and left the small occasional comment. So one of her posts stuck out to me so I left a comment that I'd want to do do a beauty series with her someday and she expressed interest. We passed messages back and forth and ended up putting a casting call out for a model and possibly a hairstylist. Thats how we ended up with Model: Crystal Sanchez and Hair Stylist: Cynthia Darling  both drove quite a ways to get to my studio.

We ended up shooting Crystal and Nikki and the photos are gorgeous. I had my friend Ayla Henderson who assisted with the smoke machine and just hung out.

Seriously love shoots like this with talented creatives filling my studio with smiles and the same goal in mind to make something beautiful. The photos on this post are just of Crystal.

Nikki's pics will be up within a week or so. Anyway. I hope you love these as much as I do!!!

Make sure and check out the gallery section of the site for more from this shoot!

Happy New Year!!

HPN.jpg

So below is my post from last year. First of I'd like to thank my loyal clients and friends for your support. It's seriously awesome working with such great people. It's really crazy to think how much I've learned since then. I've worked so hard at my craft (Photo, Graphic Design, and Printing) and not to mention just the general time and care into running my own business. I feel like 2013 was leaps and bounds more successful (regarding personal growth) compared to 2012. I can't wait to see what 2014 has in-store. I'll be working even harder with the goal to grow the business and do more beautiful work. I wish you and yours a Happy New Year. It's time to kick some ass.

Last years Post ...

"Thank you so much for a wonderful 2012 everyone. This year has been a landmark for me and the business. It's been so cool to see all these startups coming out of the woodwork and so many projects that have been more than a blast to work on. 2013 is going to be even better... the new studio is putting a fire under my ass to produce some great artwork and printing. Cheers!"

It seems like I wrote that in Jr. High haha! Anyway. I've got some amazing photos I'll be sharing in the next week which were taken in the end of 2013 that I can't wait to show you. Seriously some of my best work. Today I'll be turning over the year on my computer and backing things up… basically a lot of filing both digitally and physically.

Well not much more to say. Guess we'll talk later.

Repeal of Prohibition Anniversary Party @ The Gypsy Den Anaheim

(click to enlarge) (artwork by paulifornia)

This Thursday December 5th it's on. Party like a big band swing-star at the Gypsy Den in Anaheim's newly refurbished CENTER STREET. Check out the poster we did for this event. Seriously looks fun and we'll be there to support.

Imagine what it was like 80 years ago… That it was against the law to have a drink or nine with your friends and family. We live in some weird times and without getting super political here, I wouldn't be surprised that in our life time there'll be some sort of law that takes away a freedom that we take for granted. We the people need to stick together and not let that happen. Lets have a drink together Thursday and celebrate the fact that for now we are free and if Someone or Some entity tries to take it away from us we'll come together and fight.

See you thursday friends.

Singer Soseh back for more!

Ok. No joke. This shoot was super fun. Pizza, Jokes and The Robot. (yes the Robot dance)  Besides being talented as a singer, she also spends a lot of her time styling for shoots and video. Soseh is currently working on her first solo release, during the shoot she mentioned how hard she's working on it but also keeping it very secretive. Knowing her she's a lot like me (and her boyfriend) she's a perfectionist. So Its pretty much a guarantee that once her music is shared it'll bend the ears of a lot of people. Anyway make sure and check out the below clip from the band Capital Cities which features Soseh.

I think I saw a Ghost….Cover shoot with Derek Krantz from the TV Show 'Nashville'

ABC's NASHVILLE (photo not taken by paulifornia)

ABC's NASHVILLE (photo not taken by paulifornia)

Now modern country music isn't my cup of tea, but It makes sense that so many people have a taste for it. ABC has a new hit TV show called 'Nashville'  where the premise of the show is a fading country star coming in to conflict over a newer, younger, (sexier?) rising star. Derek Krantz plays the roll of Brent and we were lucky enough to hang out with him for a couple hours to do this shoot for Bridget Marie Magazine. Derek was hilarious from his jokes to his newsies type dance moves. Derek being a classically trained dancer, was very impressive even when goofing around in-between takes. We shot in front of the Oldest Tree In Anaheim. The thing was gigantic! In the middle of the park is an original old cottage, inside it's been rumored that theres a ghost. Here's where I got a little freaked out. While I was shooting Derek in-front of the cottage (basically that exact window in the photo below) I could have sworn I saw a head peak out from the top left of the window, which I at first assumed must have been an employee or janitor or something but Jason (the stylist and Editor of Bridget Marie Magazine) told me that no one goes in there that it's been locked shut for years. Yikes!

Anyway ghost and all the shoot was fun and I'm happy with the pics. Take a look at the portfolio section of this site for more pictures and be sure to check out this months Bridget Marie Magazine @ (www.bridgetmariemagazine.com)

WAR against Stock Photography.

WAR against Stock Photography.

So my friend Chloe Sweet (MUA/Hairstylist) had this rad idea for a duality type shoot. Something like this isn't my normal thing. We had so much fun!!! This was a two parter.. First we did in studio shots of Model: Hope Eckman … Chloe Painted her white and did her makeup and hair (wig) we shot her in studio with a black backdrop… my first pass at the edits i used stock photography for the trees. It totally bummed me out. :( I HATE HATE HATE using stock photography cause it feels like cheating. I had a trip planned to go to Seattle, WA so I told Chloe I needed time on this project. (Both to get the right trees and cause I needed to edit these in the right frame of mind) I ended up going to the Mountains about a couple hours south of Seattle (forgot the city name) and Pulled over and took the background shots. Man I'm so glad that I did that. So happy that all the elements artistically are real and taken with my camera.

NO STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY WAS USED IN THE MAKING OF THIS SERIES! There are 4 more images in this series which we'll reveal on results of a recent magazine submission.

The 'Logic of a Gardener' caught in the 'Eye of the Photographer'.

Music man, ...... Music. This is the reason I started this business. I myself am a musician and "paulifornia" started out of a necessity for artwork for demos, flyers etc. So when I get to work with musicians and artists that are doing what they love, it makes my job all the more sweeter. Gardeners Logic is a band out of Orange County and they're starting to turn heads. Check out their music here (http://gardenerslogic.bandcamp.com) Live they do the occasional Modest Mouse cover which makes just about everyone happy.

I've seen bands tend to act too cool for band photos etc. but it's important for press and promotion.... I mean what else do you send magazines, newspapers and blogs when they ask for something.  I love these guys cause they don't give a sh*t about trying to be cool... they just are.

Below (and in the portfolio section of the site) is my favorites from the portrait session.

GARDNERS LOGIC is (from left to right) Vince, Phung, Mike Willson, Ian Bailey and Wyatt Fullmer.
